Hima Das, daughter of Paddy farmer from Dhillag village in Naogon district, Assam had created history by winning Gold medal, which is India’s first ever track gold at a global event. Hima Das won Gold Medal by winning 400 metre final at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland. Hima is just 18 years old. Watch her winning moment video below.
Hima first had interest over football, plays everyday on rice fields. Once a coach seeing Hima playing football thought that Hima has good running skills. The coach then advised Hima and asked her dad to join her in Athletics.
After joining athletics, Nipon, an athletics coach with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare saw Hima’s performance on running and said this during inter-district meet, “She was wearing cheap spikes but she won gold in the 100 and 200. She ran like the wind. I hadn’t seen such a talent in ages,”.
After that Nipon shifted Hima Das to Guwahati, which was 140 kilometers away from her village. He also convinced Hima Das that she had good future in Athletics.
From there, she then started training and her coach took her to IAAF event. After winning Gold Medal, Nipon said as follows, “I keep telling Hima only one thing: Dream big. Because only a few are blessed with God-given talent. My aim was to try and make sure she is part of the relay team for the Asian Games. But she has surpassed all expectations by winning a world championship gold in the individual event.”
Personalities over India including Narendra Modi had appreciated Hima Das for her win.
